| - La première ascension du Cervin est réalisée par Edward Whymper, Francis Douglas, Charles Hudson, (en), Michel Croz et deux guides de Zermatt, Peter Taugwalder père et fils, le 14 juillet 1865. Douglas, Hudson, Hadow et Croz sont tués lors de la descente après que Hadow a glissé et entraîné les trois autres hommes dans sa chute, sur la face nord. Whymper et les deux Taugwalder, qui survivent, sont par la suite accusés d'avoir coupé la corde qui les reliait au reste du groupe pour ne pas être entraînés dans la chute, mais l'enquête qui s’ensuit ne trouve aucune preuve de leur culpabilité et ils sont acquittés.
