| - Othman ibn Affan (en arabe : عثمان بن عفان, ʿOthmān ibn ʿAffān), également connu en français (par l'intermédiaire du turc et du persan) comme Osman, né en 574 et mort en 656, est le beau-fils et un éminent compagnon de Mahomet, prophète de l'islam, ainsi que le troisième calife bien guidé. Né dans un clan mecquois de premier plan, les Omeyyades de la tribu des Quraych, il joue un rôle majeur dans l’histoire de l'islam et est connu pour avoir commandé la compilation du Coran dans sa forme canonique. À la mort du calife Omar ibn al-Khattâb, âgé de 59 ou 60 ans, Othman, âgé de 69 ou 70 ans, lui succède, étant ainsi le deuxième plus âgé à gouverner comme calife. (fr)
