- Philippa est prénommée en hommage à sa grand-mère paternelle, la reine Philippa de Hainaut, qui est vraisemblablement sa marraine. Blanche de Lancastre est accompagnée lors de ce premier accouchement par une sage-femme que Jean de Gand décrit dans une lettre comme « Ilote la femme sage » et dans le registre ducal comme « notre bien-aimée Elyot, la sage-femme de Leycestre ». Après la mort de sa mère Blanche en 1368, Philippa est prise en charge dès ses huit ans par Alyne Gerberge, épouse d'un écuyer ducal. Plus tard, Katherine Swynford est nommée préceptrice de la jeune Philippa et de sa sœur cadette Élisabeth : elle occupe encore ce poste en juillet 1376 et même en 1381. (fr)
